Remembering the Torch

Mar 14, 2017

This video records a network test that some of the devs from Ship of Heroes conducted using a rented server on March 11th, 2017. Optimizing network structure is an ongoing activity for most MMOs.

Here at SoH, we package our game at least once a week to make sure everything is working correctly, and we periodically test to see if we have network limitations or issues. For this test, we created a Torch power in remembrance of the last days of the closed MMORPG City of Heroes, and logged in to the packaged game at night. Apotheosis City looks very different at night, and provides a unique environment for fighting, or for just hanging out. We’re particularly pleased with the appearance of the clouds drifting across the starry night sky.

All of the characters shown were logged in and manually controlled by members of our dev team, and by their families. We connected to a server that we rent for these tests to minimize the cost of development. Test users connected simultaneously from four US states: Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina, and Texas. The test was a complete success; there were no problems with networking, server performance, or the performance of the packaged game client. While we expect to continue to improve networking performance, so far we have not had a problem. As far as we know, this is the only successful network test to ever be recorded and publicly shown by a pre-Kickstarter MMORPG.

The Mission Event Begins in July

We’ve been working hard to set up another Ship of Heroes Beta event, and now the time is approaching.  We have wanted to show off a full mission arc for some time, as well as some other missions.  It did take longer to bugfix than we had hoped, but you can expect to try out these missions in late June or July.  We are showing off the first Iris mission arc, which has several branching choices that can interact in complex ways – more on that in a future newsletter.

Invasion Event Newsletter

With this newsletter, our Invasion Beta Event has officially ended for now. Over the three runs, we observed that Devastators were overwhelmingly the most popular character archetypes for the event (Tankers were second), and that the community has a preference for us to make the fight more structured and less chaotic. So we are working on that, as you see in the list below.

Fight the Berserker on August 29th

On Saturday the 29th, we will have our third run of the Nagdellian invasion. We’ve made changes in response to the first couple of runs, and we think we have fixed most of the crashes, so come on down and see how it looks on the 29th. The invasion will be a recurring event once Ship of Heroes launches.
