I voted important - I love crafting and consider it a priority feature in any game I play. HOWEVER - if the game will be significantly delayed to have crafting at launch, I would rather wait, and see it done correctly with a proper amount of development time.

I love the idea of crafting, but I want to start protecting the citizens of the F.H.S. Justice as quickly as possible. I can wait a little bit for it to be done right. I chose slightly important.

It's been almost eight years and four months since we lost CoH and it's been rough for many of us. I was fortunate enough to dream that I was playing CoH again just two nights ago and boy it felt good.
A lot of us have been dying to play something very close to what CoH was for many years now and what we really want is to get back into that feel of being a super-powered character. City of Heroes didn't have the salvage and invention system at launch and at the time it really didn't need it. The game and the players were able to wait for a bit until it was time to get something new and the invention system came when it was needed.
For these reasons I have voted that the crafting system isn't important for Ship of Heroes at launch. If time and resources can be directed toward the powers and missions systems for launch then I believe this is what is most important. Let us get into the game proper and get to the crafting system in due time. It's nothing we can't do without at this point.

I voted not important. While crafting can be anice thing to have in an MMO, I wouldn't want to see the game delayed significantly for it.

I’ve voted something else.
While I think crafting will be very important for the game I also think that getting the game out there sooner is better.
And then to contradict myself I want people that join the game to stick around because they have plenty to do, and maybe that means crafting at launch.
I am just full of contradictions today :/

CoH waited until issue 9 to bring us crafting and IO's and with standard SO's some characters could still be made to work well
Crafting basically insured that aside from more badges to get that all characters of any type could reach the almighty defense cap, as well as things like recharge cap, recovery cap, etc.
HOWEVER....there is a difference between a crafting system and a GRINDfest to obtain the ingredients for the crafting. I had no problems with CoH's salvage system, but Star Wars, DC universe spring to mind as GRINDfests.....

I remember when CoH first came out, they said they were going to be different: they weren't going to be an "item" game. The game wasn't intended to collect items, or to craft items, like other MMO's. I remember that to me, that was a disappointment. I always loved crafting, and was also playing Ryzom, which is a total crafting game. Everything in Ryzom was crafted. No items were dropped or found except crafting mats.
SoH will have to decide how important crafting is. To be truly important to the game, all of the best items should be only available through crafting. Or, it could just be a side hobby, not necessary for the game at all.
I would like crafting to be in the game, but at launch, a full crafting system is probably overreach. I would suggest at launch, only the most basic crafting, like refining, be available. Let us gather drops, and refine them to something, but we don't need a full featured crafting system at launch,

Crafting is important only IF
* crafted objects are significantly better than drops and cash store objects
* you don't have to spend 900 hours crafting useless crap to get to that one item you wanted to craft from the beginning.
* crafting should be HARD, requiring a certain level of commitment to master (i.e. every newbie should not be able to make top tier stuff)
* crafted items should be able to sell on the marketplace (of course)
* crafted costume items should be rare items.
I just don't want to see what happened to SWTOR where I spent weeks learning to craft top tier lightsaber crystals, then they had some sign-up push where they handed out top-tier crystals to everyone who created a character. Also, top tier crystals were available from the cash store. It was a massive disappointment to spend all that time and never sell a crystal.

Balancing power sets against each other with and without boosts from dropped items will take you a long time as it is. Even so, there will inevitably be post launch buffs and nerfs once the players start min/maxing.
Adding crafting now, will make balancing/rebalancing that much harder.

I agree with this. The game should be balanced without crafting and then have crafting added to give an optional extra layer of power.I don't actually want it.

I really enjoyed the inventions system in CoH but part of that enjoyment was never feeling forced into using it. I'd like to see a similar balance in SoH where crafting wasn't seen as the mandatory baseline for character builds.

My opinion is that crafting should not be part of the game at launch.
Crafting should be a way to fill-in gaps in the game. We won't identify the gaps until we have played for a bit.
Also, please do not make a crazy number of distinct components.
If crafting is a developed skill, please do not make it so that you have to lose one to develop another.
Please make sure that components drop evenly. I hate having 1e6 of a component, but none of another that I need for the recipe. City of Heroes did a good job. I would just make fewer levels of crafting components.
Please make inventory sortable by price, rarity, level, alphabetical etc. Please make inventory sortable.

Like some said here crafting would be nice to have. It will draw in some players. And I don't think it should be mandatory.

I hate crafting in MMO's. Its adds yet another grind to a game and it is usually a grind you are forced to do if you want to make any cash in game or stay on top of the best of the best items. I don't need nor want the grind. I would rather play the game and have fun playing it.
