The game looks too clean

Postby NitroCipher » Sat May 26, 2018 7:00 pm

Let me start off by saying that I love all the work that has been put into this game thus far.
As I look at all of the videos and screenshots, I can't help but feel as though the city is portrayed well. This might be just my ascetics, but I feel like the game needs more clutter. If you look at COH, almost all of the map has something taking up space. (whether it be park benches, trees, hills, etc.) Everything seems too bright and shiny, while cities generally have some amount of dirt and grime mixed in with everything else.

They have been putting in those little extra's to the arch area currently, and we will see the items for the login test. there will be videos. not sure if civilians and auto traffic will be happening for that. but I'd like to see it also.

The game is still a work in progress. The small details will be added to the game a little at a time, until just before release. Then there will be a LOT added. There are specialists in the game design field that do this for a living, and if needed, they will be called in a few weeks before release. Keep in mind this game is over a year from the earliest possible release date, and about a year and a half or so from the most likely release date.

The game isn't even in beta yet, so much yet to be done as has been said already in this thread. Give it time, patience is a virtue.

How dirty would you expect a futuristic city cleaned by an army of robots to be?

Are you referring to say, back alley type of areas with chicken bones, trash, and cigarette buds in the street? That was my initial thought reading his comments.

Personally I think we should have one street. Main street per se (for lack of an official name).

that looks something like one of these.

Nowhere near busy enough. Try this ridiculously congested Japanese place...

Still got to take into consideration, that this is

1. a place in the future, so it is not supposed to look like our used surroundings and I would expect future robots to be able to keep a place clean ;) (like laser beams for getting rid of bubble gums ;) )

The points two and three are just some thoughts ( I don´t expect anybody really asking for it, but since there are pictures I though I give some input)

2. this is not a grown city but it is an artificial place which was created a short while ago to be the home for a certain amount of people. I can´t imagine that after such a short period of time the ship would have such a bad living space situation already, that they don´t know where to put them (that would be quiet bad planning if that would be the case in just a few years that ship is around) So I am pretty sure, that they built the place the way, that it would not be crowded because crowds do only have disadvantages, so if you plan a place you don´t plan for crowds. The engines for waste and atmosphere would be stressed, the material itself would have trouble with weight and usage. The living room would be uncomfortable (why would one want that to be on a city ship?) - the security which has to take care of sensible areas would have trouble keeping people away - just to mention a few reasons.
I would expect, that they would rather build a new ship than accept a crowded place ;).
So I expect a few little groups walking or standing around, here a person, there a child and a few vehicles in between ;) (the rest for letting people have a reality feeling would be plants, playgrounds, stuff to sit on and things like that)

3. Yes and by the way I believe an artificial enviroment won´t have rainy streets. I mean why should they? Rain on a street is good for nothing when you live in the future and have robots to take care of the cleaning. There surely will be rain - where the parks are (propably during night), where the agricultural places are - but I am pretty sure, that the rain will be there, where it does not disturb people in enjoying their day.

NitroCypher, welcome to the forums. :)

Your comments are very welcome. And I want to tell you something: just this morning (Monday, east coast time) I'm looking at a new video draft of one of our mission maps which has been re-done. Specifically, the map has been re-done in a way that will respond to the issue you are raising.

Of course, we've had this video in the works for over a month. It was not made just because of your post -- but it is germane to the issue you are raising. We plan/ hope to get this video published this week, so please stay tuned.

There are a couple of things going on in our story, that relate to the cleanliness of the city. First off, as has been noted above, this is the future. Robots, nanites, and other technologies help to keep the city clean and in good order. The city is not overcrowded -- when the ship gets crowded they can add more sections, and also people can leave to a planet, or join the ship from a planet. People come and go. We're actually planning a future lore piece on the nanite technology in the city as well.

From a technical point of view, in terms of making the game, we are coding three huge changes that affect how "clean" the city looks. First off, adding the day/ night cycle changes the lighting, making it more dynamic, and eliminating the effect I often call "Abu Dhabi at high noon." In all of our videos to date the city is awash is high-noon bright light. Well, not anymore. We'll be showing that soon too, in a video.

Second, as you'll see in the new mission map video, we are adding props, lighting changes, and "stuff." We hope you'll see what a change this makes in the appearance of the map, although of course this is an indoor map, not the outdoor map of the city. But we're doing something similar to the area under the Arch for the login test, so you'll be able to see that too in the next month or two.

Third, we are working on getting NPC civilians walking around. I know, this is not piles of rubble or burger wrappings blowing across the street. But the NPCs make the city more vibrant, more real, more immersive. This is going to take a couple of more months, but it will come.

So I'm asking you to keep watching. See what you think in a couple of months, once we are showing the enhanced props, the day/ night cycle lighting, and the NPC civilians. After that comes cars/ trucks and the trains moving. The city is coming alive, but it does take time.

And once again, welcome to the Ship of Heroes forums.

Since Consultant mentioned it, I saw all those nice screenshots today (I know I am a little bit behind) about the day/night lighting and I think it is getting awesome - with sunset and the nice reflections of sunlight and everything - great work :)
