Can I get my hopes up?

Postby Frost033 » Fri Mar 17, 2017 7:13 pm

I was a long time CoH player, like I'm sure many of you were, and I've been searching for a replacement since it was shut down. There have been a few games that have gotten my hopes up and excited about only to go nowhere. I stumbled on this game today and with every click got more and more excited, but I hesitate to get TOO excited based on other game fails. So my question is this, is there a REAL (and realistic) plan to release this game in a foreseeable? future?

They've met every milestone (and exceeded expectations for most) that they have put forward in the schedule:
https://www.shipofheroes.com/schedule-to-release/

Discussions lean to Alpha and testing into end of 2017, Beta in 2018, and (hopefully/possibly) playable release date end of 2018.

Each release has shown progress and the game building upon the previous structure defined.

I'm currently a (still cautious, but hopeful) fan, but it's a an based on research and evidence.

Watch all the videos, read the reviews, and LISTEN to how Consultant talks about the game and the goals.

Cheers,

-Griff

The Kickstarter for Ship of Heroes will be the first significant hurdle. . .The stated target is $400,000.

A few years ago, another successor project, City of Titans, had their own Kickstarter and was able to raise an astonishing $678,189 with an original goal of $320,000 while providing nothing more than concept art and a wall of text. The devs stated in their Kickstarter that City of Titans would be released to the public in November, 2015. A lot of folks, including me, are still waiting. :(

I'm confident the Ship of Heroes Kickstarter will be just as successful for the following reasons:

The Ship of Heroes team has already provided proof of concept, videos showing character creation, environment, and combat. As mentioned by Griff above, they've laid out their milestones and have, so far met every single one of them in a transparent manner.

The team is being led by Casey McGeever aka Consultant, a self-admitted fan of CoH and who has concrete experience in business and project management. Here's his Linked In, where he is proud to note he's CEO of SoH's parent company.

Consultant isn't some burn-out, wearing a marijuana-scented grey hoodie shirt with Cheeto dust handprints and hipster pants, using his barely-learned UE4 skills with free assets and textures, and looking for a quick payday based on a sketchy premise in an attempt to exploit a bunch of nostalgic saps like me. . .

OR IS HE?! :o

I could not reply immediately -- I had to brush the Cheeto dust off of my pants first. :)

This is a real game, with a small, but very skilled team of excellent people creating it. We worry constantly about hitting our schedule, and we try to leave a little wriggle room in the projected future for the Alpha and Beta stages. This is because things can unexpectedly go wrong, even for a skilled team. We need the Kickstarter to succeed to continue to build the game as we hope to do.

But let's think about a question, here in the forums, that we discuss among the SOH dev team. Suppose two of us devs were going to grab up a small group of donors (like 4-5) from the Kickstarter and say "let's run through Apotheosis City and street sweep. First, each of you will need to make a character." And then the lucky 4-5 get a copy of the current version of the packaged game, log into a rented server, create characters, and run through AC with us killing stuff, just as a test. Let's suppose that during the test, we get XP and loot, and then level up at least once, and go see a trainer to get a new power or two.

In our mind that is clearly an Alpha test. Probably the first Alpha test.

Some dev teams think a successful Alpha can be when a dev takes a single character into the level and demonstrates powers (maybe with enemies, maybe without). We've already done that in the Sneak Peek video, so we are looking to an Alpha with players who are not devs.

Once the Kickstarter succeeds, we're not too worried about doing the small team, escorted Alpha late this year. Obviously we can do more than one of these, learning something each time. We're working on a new enemy grouping right now, and we would need at least one more group, plus some additional code revisions and additions. We show our progress pretty transparently. And the most important thing for our community to see is that our development progress is additive -- it all stacks. When we add another enemy group they'll be shown in Apotheosis City, with our heroes, which will also have Nagdellians standing around, and the previously shown hero and villain powers, plus new stuff, all in one video. Signature heroes shown will have been made in our own CCT. Because all of the pieces stack.

We're building a game. :)

I could not have asked for a better response. EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I will be donating to the kickstarter for sure.

Thanks again for the replies.

If you're disappointed (and most of us don't think you will be) at least you won't be alone. =D

VO and CoT has single handily destroyed how these projects are viewed. I wonder if this will affect SoH?

"Oh, another "successor" with their promises, I will pass"

I don't necessarily think this way but I cant blame those who do. These developers have visual footage that they can push out content by the end of 2017 or early 2018. i think they knew what the deal was, this successor business is a joke, in order to distinguish themselves from the jokes they needed to display something no other successor could, great gameplay footage.

If CoT can get by on drawings, it is safe to say SoH can get by on great visual footage. You never know though, VO and CoT has caused so much damage to the fanbase with their nonsense. I would not be shocked if SoH reached or failed to reach the goal.

Or perhaps because other failures were disappointing, a project with tangible offerings including a professional plan and professional developers may become a rallying cry and reignite the beacon of hope. (And maybe loosen some purse strings in the process.)

I felt the exact same way, A1Fighter. One of my old SG mates sent me the link to SoH. (Yes, we still stay up on our Facebook page.)

I looked at the various media stills on the main page and thought it looked pretty, but I saw similar things from VO and CoT. That's when I saw the various videos on youtube. I didn't see an unfinished mess with glitchy movement and cut-and-paste graphics.

I saw a fully realized video game with a level that looked just as good as CoH when it first launched. I saw an actual game that was built just months after it announced the game was being made.

Many of my SG-mates are still gun shy about supporting anything less than a full game, but I am not. I have a good feeling about this game, so good that it has my support.

A bullet may have a name on it, but 20 pounds of C4 is more of a "to whom it may concern."

They didn't build it in months after announcing it though, that's what's incredible about this project.

They certainly already had a nugget of an idea when they incorporated in early 2016. They were ALREADY working on the game for at least approximately a year, with their own funds, BEFORE even announcing it to the public. They had laid out a substantial amount of groundwork, put up their own money, laid out and made their milestones to date, and are now showing to the public, "Here's what we got so far. Like it? Support us."

That, to me, shows how sincere and passionate the devs are about the game.

This is by far not a fully realized game. I have high hopes for it, don't get me wrong. But they are very very early in development. They don't have any real "game" yet, just a few parts, enough to make some videos that have (probably) a lot of scripting inside.

This is still impressive since they didn't have much time to develop the game yet. All this is possible because nowadays you can buy all the basic technology that in the early times you had to develop yourself.

The thing that does make me comfortable of this game is the level of dedication and involvement of the devs. Unlike their competitors they are *very* active, always asking their fan base questions and answering everything as good as they can, while being open for suggestions. One example: In the forums the devs proposed their idea that there should be no death penalty at all. When a lot of people (including myself) pointed out that this would trivialize the game, that death would just become a travel power, they listened and made very intelligent comments about it. I never experienced this level of dedication with any devs (though the pantheon guys come close to it, a reason that i support that game as well).
