FPS reports

Postby GladDog » Sun Nov 03, 2019 8:49 pm

I've run the game on three systems so far. Tomorrow I add a 4th.

System 1 - Desktop - i7 - 6700 24GB RAM game on an SSD ATI Radeon RX-480 8GB vid
Game runs extremely well at max graphics, rarely seeing an FPS rate below 40 and most of the time staying in the 60-80 range.

System 2 - Laptop - i7-7700 16GB RAM, game on an SSD, Nvidia GTX1060 6GB video
Same as above, the framerates were actually a bit higher, since i run that laptop at 1600x900. They would probably be a bit lower than the desktop at 1080p, but pretty close.

System 3 - Desktop - i5-2400 16GB RAM, game on an SSD, AMD Radeon HD R7-240 2GB vid
Even at minimum settings, the framrates at 1080p were intolerable, running about 10 FPS. Turning the rez to 1280x720 helped, but even then typical FPS was about 18, which is not acceptable. High FPS was about 23. The video card in this was a pretty basic card when released; it is not very good right now, it seems.

I'll try and get a dump of card and memory on my gaming laptop, but it was completely unplayable

I'll update this post when I got home, but i was pulling 7.2 FPS

I can play wow and several other MMOs with minimal issue.

I'm using a windows 10 64 bit system with a relatively old AMD Radeon R9 380 with 4GB VRAM.
Getting approx 30-60 FPS depending on what's going on.

Update;

I hooked system 3 up to a better internet connection ( a wire) and the FPS went up considerably. The FPS is still too low, but barely too low. FPS of 22-25 were common, although they dropped into the 15-19 range a lot. Peak was 28 FPS. I would say the better internet raised the average from 15 FPS to about 20 FPS.

System 4; 6th gen Celeron dual core with 16GB RAM, game on an SSD, using an ATI Radeon HD 7870 2GB. Graphics set on default, which is setting 2.
Very encouraging. FPS averaged 42-48, with peaks in the 60s. the lows only rarely dipped into the 20s. At one point (about 7 years ago) that card was AMD's top of the line, and it shows that it is still well supported.

The game definitely relies on the video card. The i5-2400 in system 3 is a quad core, and should perform a bit better than the Celeron dual core. But the much better video card in system 4 made all of the difference.

I'm seeing something different but have an entirely different set-up.

I'm a Mac guy (any chance for a Mac OS version?) so I'm running Win 10 inside of Parallels 15 which supports DirectX (is that the proper term?)

My Hackintosh system has an i7 7700k, 32 GB RAM and runs a Radeon RX 570 8 GB.

I'm seeing 16-20 FPS when doing nothing and lower when moving/flying around. I reduced graphics to High from Ultra and things look a little clearer but no change in FPS.

I might look into dual boot....

You won't see many games made for Windows AND Macs any more. Apple got rid of OpenGL and Vulkan support, and only support games using their own API called Metal. So, if you make a game in Windows, you need to completely remake it from scratch for Mac. no porting allowed any more!

Because of that, only huge studios have the resources to make games for both. Since there are way more computer gamers on PC than Mac, Apple basically thumbed their noses at computer gamers.

So no, I doubt there will ever be a Mac port for Ship of Heroes. But never say never; if the game is wildly successful and there is enough demand...

The coders and I think we have a memory leak somewhere. My personal testing suggests that is may be in the FX for travel powers. I see it mostly when I superspeed around the level, with fire FX.

As a test, I run up to the hospital doors, turn off travel powers and go inside. Often my FPS jumps into the 160-200 range (this is a smaller map than the whole city) on my gaming laptop.

We spent some time trying to diagnose the possibly memory leak yesterday, without success. But since we think it joined us with Unreal engine 4.21 (which had some "experimental" code from Epic) and we'll be jumping to 4.23 after the Beta, this may solve itself. Sometimes we get lucky that way. If not, we'll track it down and fix it.

But right now, the longer I'm in the city, the lower my FPS goes, so every test we do with FPS is giving artificially lower results. Of course, as long as we know, we can assess the data in light of the leak.

By the way, the Significance Manager program we built into SoH tries to set a minimum taget for FPS of ten, and it adjusts your graphical settings automatically to give you 10 or better.

You can change this number if you want to do so.

But going frame by frame is so boring! This is an improvement over many games, which just let you see that old time frame-by-frame experience.

Is there a way to select which video card gets used?

I went in and manually changed all of the settings to lowest setting and managed to get to 14FPS, but still normally am hovering around 6FPS and the game is unplayable.
