December Outlook

Postby Consultant » Sat Dec 02, 2017 5:57 am

December is here! It's going to be a busy month for many of us, including devs who are taking time off to be with their families, to celebrate Holidays, to travel, or some combination of those activities.

We are working on some very challenging milestones for this month:

1. We want to show the Twin Swords powerset this month -- that is the powerset that Sword Blossom uses. We're working on some elements in code, animations and FX that we have not done before, so this powerset is a bit of a challenge. But we will get it done. One thing we've realized is that it does take years to make all of the distinct powers and powersets that a game like this requires. And they can be polished and improved almost indefinitely. It's not possible to just throw them together at the end. I'm glad we started a year ago.

2. We're going to have a small-scale combat Alpha test this month, probably at the end of the month. We'll form a team, run through the Science Park area with them, and fight enemy mobs. We'll be recording at least one on the runs and publishing a video of it. It may seem simple, but we think we'll get valuable feedback from this. there will be more than one team of course, but we'll do them one at a time so we can pay attention to the live feedback.

3. We still need to update our website with new devs. That's important!

4. We're going to show off the improvements and expansion in the Warehouse area. We may do this through one or two interviews, since we've had some feedback that the community likes to hear us talk about progress and plans for Ship of Heroes. That's dangerous -- I can talk forever about the game. :)

5. We're planning to deliver one surprise during the month. Yes, that's a tease. We can't resist. But we all like presents, don't we?

6. We're going to have a forum thread at the end of the month to discuss what the community wants us to do, and to show (those are competing priorities) during 2018. We want to get the community feedback after a year of public effort. What did you like, what can we do without, what did we not do? So start thinking.

This week and next we're talking about where we want to be, in terms of development, at the end of Q1 to enable the remainder of the development cycle to proceed as planned.

It's kind of fun to do the planning. To get everyone on board with their pieces of the project. We're still not sure how to do a couple of the pieces, but in each case we have an approach, and a backup.

It's been a year since we launched this website. We've published 17 videos. Attracted all of you. Built a prototype, and then upgraded it. We like where we are at, right now. :)

This team has restored my faith in crowd-funded projects. Very professional indeed. :)

LOL, we're a team that has not had a successful crowd-funding event. At least not yet.

But we're going to make this game.

Thank you in advance, Solarverse.

I just thought I would let you all know what we're doing at the moment. We're working on getting ready to have some supporters and friends come through and do some street sweeping with us this month in the Science Park area of Apotheosis City. This is our first small-scale Alpha test -- the escorted Alpha tours. For the dev team, this is a huge deal -- everything has to work, after all. :)

But also, we need to do some internal testing before we bring people in, so everyone on the dev team is racing around, checking and fixing things. Like "does that muzzle flash go forward, or backward?" Yikes! Or, which characters are we going to provide to people? Should we have more than one tank on a team? Would that be confusing?

And we need to have a means to consolidate all of the feedback we get. Some will be in notes, some will be verbal -- we need to capture it all.

Hopefully we'll get a good video of at least one test, to release. And then next year we'll release our plan to make improvements based on what we learned.

I can't wait to hear the results! This game has had me super excited from the first day I discovered your website. And I'm not alone. I think the further along this game grows, the more people will be pulled in to this game.

For the testing, I would let people play what they'd like to play. Multiple tanks is fine, if they want to try different powersets.

Looking forward to see, and hopefully participate, in some of these alpha tests.

For the tests, we're going to give participants their characters. It's a combat test, not a CCT test. We'll probably make it easy on ourselves and have people play our signature heroes or recognized characters. It's not as helpful to us if five tanks come onto the team, as we want to test the attack powers and combat system generally, with all of our powersets.

And besides, we want to show more diverse team composition. This is a combat test, not a balancing run. Balancing comes last, and that's where we will need to see if a five-tank team is gimped (or overpowered) somehow.

Good point ... TY ... I see your thinking of how this will play out with a team ... I like that better... teaming is what made COH feel like a community and Teaming will make the ship feel like a community too

*paces casually outside the gates, and tries to join the crowd unnoticed as they go in for alpha street sweeping. Notices a guard looking at me, ready to question my presence. Ducks between the legs of the person in line in front of me and races in cackling madly as the guard chases after, swearing*
