FPS Success in SoH

Postby Consultant » Mon Nov 26, 2018 11:10 am

We're sending out a newsletter giving some data on what we've done this year to make SoH workable and playable as a major MMORPG, which requires a decent FPS capability. Very few teams publish sort of stuff before launch, partly because a lot of fPS depends on the player, and not on the game.

We're kind of expecting that many people will be bored by the technical newsletter. That's fine as long as we're all willing to agree that those who do want to see the technical details, should get some material too.

There are a lot of little things that can be seen in the newsletter. So let the questions begin!

Put GEEK ALERT at the top of the newsletter!

Also, you write well, I think many people will enjoy whatever you write and see the info you are trying to transfer to them.

Looking forward to seeing that. It'll give us something to chat about for a while...

While you're quietly getting on with creating the game, we're trying to keep ourselves occupied by talking about it

OK, let me add this comment. I'm sure some people are going to ask "what's that costume?" about some of the characters on the screen.

It's true, we have fallen behind on revealing the new costumes. We have a number added into the game already that are new.

We will catch up. We faced a period of time where we could focus mostly on creating the game and solving problems, and our communications lagged a little.

That's on me -- my fault.

But the good news is that we have some new stuff to show. Some very good stuff. :)

great read, loved the technical summary at the end.

I spent the last 20 minutes discussing your fps results with a friend of mine who's not even into the heroes genre, and he's decided to keep his eye on the game now.

There are some really nice looking costumes there! I hope we'll be able to see some of those during the login test :)

Yes indeed. Our discussion this morning is about getting 110 completely unique characters created, including with the new costumes.

So, er, are those NPC's holding torches for the CoH Shutdown Vigil or as part of the fps test? :)

I know fire can cause a real performance drop, we can see it in some current games, get a few torches going and all the reflections, etc. brings FPS crashing down. Bit like water in some respects.

I may be mis-understanding your question.

In the pictures in the newsletter, the guys with the torches are heroes, not NPCs. They look, act, and have mixed costumes on just like heroes because they are heroes. The torches are relatively light, but we are using them as a placeholder for attack powers because we are testing how many heroes and enemies we can have in a scene, and if the heroes keep dying, the count will be off.

These pictures are all from the FPS testing.

Did I answer your question?

Yep, thanks :)

I misused the term 'NPC' there. Probably comes from spending too much time away from games with computer controlled characters, that's my excuse anyway. I forgot that you log in multiple player characters to do your testing.

The torch thing looks like a coincidence. We're coming up to the anniversary of CoH's shutdown and each year, a few days before and on 30th, people pining for CoH log into Paragon Chat and hold a torch vigil for the game!

Love seeing these numbers! Thanks for all your hard work. Waiting for the end of 2019 for beta won’t be easy but will 100% be worth it. Any news on the login test now that these numbers look really good?
