Yes, some enemies will only come out at night, in the current plan, and others will become more active.

A bite late (I've been on holiday), but yeah, I have to agree that is the most spectacular video yet. The building window lighting is absolutely beautiful. Cannot wait to see that first-hand :D

We're making good progress on SoH, but little things do crop up. Yesterday and today we are looking at a bug in which combat works fine for one player, but not for a team. We'll get it sorted out, but this sort of thing does crop up.

This example is one reason that we like out approach of building ever-more-complete working versions of the game. When you add a really big piece, or try to combine a lot of code at once, it takes much longer to track down multiple problems. Adding small pieces creates small problems, generally. We solve them and then we move on.

Team combat is the problem for today.

I call that "snowball development". You start with a little snowball, and start rolling it. It gets bigger and bigger.

Pretty soon it is a giant snowball screaming downhill and smashing buildings as it goes.

Yep, and it is intensely frustrating for the code team when something is going wrong, and it is very likely just one line of code, somewhere...

They run all of the traps on debugging and they find...something else that is not working the way we want it to work. They fix that, but the first problem remains.

LOL, this is the way it is with code sometimes. We get these things solved eventually.

Yes we can. Sadly a new bug is keeping one of our best artists from working on the game. We are slowly grinding through the possibilities for fixing that bug.

The guy who is unable to work is, of course, the guy who made the train. It's Murphy's Law at work.

But we definitely have some plans to jazz up the train.

okay, thank you. and honestly it was my only critique (after watching the video a half dozen times), well other than not having the words "Golden Ace" spelled out in golden lights on all the buildings. :D

Heisenbug - A bug that only appears when not actively looking for it.
Schrodenbug - A bug that only appears when you look at the code and realise it should never have worked until now.
Riemann-Hilbug - A bug that only occurs when two completely bug-free sections of code interact.

Can we test the character creator again right before the login test? or if not test use it to make our own characters for the login test.

One of the most infuriating types of bug is something that actually works the way it was intended until some other bug is fixed. Fixing bugs can be like letting a small stone go at the top of a hill.

It's Halloween!

Your dev team decided that we should offer up a Halloween video, to celebrate. It should be published in about 4 hours, more or less.

This particular video is something we pulled together from some internal dev videos, as we were working on what we want to have in the future, as Halloween content. So it has a little different feel to it.

The one thing that I think is a departure from the norm is to show segments of developer videos, assembled into a published version. You'll see something new just from that (and more, in terms of Halloween). Internally, when we make videos, we always have an FPS meter running so we can detect trouble spots in the level, or problems with the FX, or whatever. So we left the FPS meter running in these segments.

You'll see some remarkably good FPS. Well, some of us have fast computer rigs. But the real driver for improved FPS is a set of technical changes which we have been working on for a couple of years now.

We want to publish some data on the effects, just so that all of you can share our sense of satisfaction. We've worked out some good stuff relative to FPS, and it's also necessary stuff for an MMORPG. We'll show that in the near future.

But in the meantime, happy Halloween!
