Christopher Robin's New Art, WIP's n stuff

Postby Christopher Robin » Sat Jan 28, 2017 4:32 pm

Well well, what do we have here? A new "spiritual successor" to my beloved City of Heroes?
Hmm... very interesting. These art forums are looking a wee bit sparse
though... and by a bit sparse I mean totally empty.

Ah well, you know what they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single thread...?
Or was that a journey of a thousand posts begins with but a single artz...?
...ummm a thousand steps begins with but a straight line?

Whatevs, the point is let's get the artz started in here shall we?

P.S. Comments and con/crit welcome. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

One of my main heroes in CoH and, more specifically, the one I use as my avatar for all
my live contests this is my Fire/ SS/ Regen tanker Brahn Fuhrnos
(A.K.A. Christopher Robin). Here in pencils...

Image

and here in full digital color! His favorite ingame taunt was
"Hey (/bind auto insert villain name) it's time for you to Feel the Burn!"

Heya Lazarus thanks! I look forward to posting more works.
Also I imagine I won't be the only one posting art...
once I get involved others tend to follow.

In fact I expect a certain pink text to magically start
appearing sooner rather than later. ;)

Hey there Consultant, howz it? Happy to do so
and thanks for the comment. More art on the way. :)

Out of curiosity are you a community rep, a game dev or something else?
Sorry I don't know anyone here yet but I just found this place a few days ago.

One thing I enjoyed immensely from my years on the old CoH 606 art forums was collaborative art. I've worked
with dozens of other artists there and on DA (after the forums died) on a wide variety of projects sometimes
drawing the lines, other times doing color flats and on occasion I would get requests to do color
punch ups (as I called them) where I took an already colored piece and painted on top
of the existing work adding contrast and depth in order to "punch it up" a bit.

This then is an example of just how awesome a collab can be. Here are the pencils of Brahn
in his civilian alter ego from above that were colored by Digital Elf over on DA.

Digital Elf's colors

And, after asking her permission, this is my color punch up that I painted on a layer above her colors.
The collaborative result is a win/win as I most likely would never have used those colors
in that combination without her input and she gets to see what her colors
could look like if pushed farther than she was willing to go herself.

aaah collabs. I love 'm! An artist can learn so much from them, because the artpiece will be out of the artist's hands at some point and probably be finished in a complete different way than that artist expected! It will make him/her think outside the box (or inside if you're a whovian..because you know.. the box is bigger on the inside Image )

Indeed! Well said DD, in fact, that same piece which I left in the collab
thread has been "finished" twice more by two other artists.
Bhudicae who wanted to practice her colored pencils...

Image

And BAquitania who wanted to show Brahn burn (he is a Fire Tank after all)...

Image

They both went in a totally different directions and took the design to somewhere
I never would have. You learn to see how different people looking at the
same lines can have totally different visions for them.

Speaking of Collab threads... hmmm 8-)

It is awesome to see so many takes on one drawing by different artists. It points out that there are so many ways to make art. It's inspiring!

That's what I felt too. Each was a "Woah! I never
thought of it like that." moment for me.

...aaaand now we have a collab thread! :D

To celebrate that here is another drawing (quicker and more sketchy) I posted
where I invited anyone to color it and got surprised by Gem-Arts
lovely rendition which I then further punched up.

Here then is my drawing which miraculously came
together in just under 20 minutes (I was on fire that day)!

Image

Here are the colors provided by Gemma.

...and here is my punch up colors painted on a new layer over the top.

I put this over in the collab thread to get things started since the character design is pretty simple
no exotic armor or auras etc. etc. It does have some shading/detailing already applied though
so I will put up some plain linework as well. I've had people tell me they love practicing
color on my lines while others just starting out have said in private they looked
intimidating if they are too "detailed." Everyone has a different idea and
people are coming from different places and levels of experience so
in case this is what anyone might think I thought I would put up
an example of that exact design being colored. Deegar for whom that
picture was drawn is quite talented herself and she collaboratively colored
the image shortly after I presented it to her. Here then is the design I posted up.

Image

...and here is her coloring. It appears she traced over some of the lines, especially in her
hair, to clean them up (a bit like what an inker would do) and tinted their color
to have them blend better and then used a very muted palette. You can
still see the work of both artists but if I didn't know better I would
think one person did this. Such a smooth blending of styles!
I'm quite fond of the result. Collabs are great like that.

Image

Apparently I totally "nailed the eyebrows" and they actually resemble the person on whom the
character is based. Neat trick since I've never seen or met them... of course that doesn't
mean I didn't totally take credit for getting them right anyway (I'm so modest).

Yes! I remember this one! Also that "the other Dee" Image did a great job in coloring.

It is true.. your drawings are fun to color for some reason. They just seem to make you want to. What is this magic?!
