Every generation has them. The beatniks, the goths, the emos. As long as humans dwell within the galaxy, there will always be some who find themselves disillusioned and detached from society. Unlike the mostly harmless counter culture movements of the past... The Grim Stars are of a different breed.
Adorned in gothic rock attire, the Grim Stars have spread like wildfire amongst troubled teens and disgruntled adults. Lead by Johny Crow, the enigmatic leader of the Gothic rock band "A Grim Star Rising" The Grim Stars are as common a sight in classrooms, to the city streets and clubs. While many find the nihilistic, rebellious movement little more then a escape from the norm... others, however, take their devotion to the Grim Star Life far more seriously, cutting off ties to their families, selling their belongings and responding with violence to anyone who tries to separate them from their flock.
When Sarah Applewood, the daughter of the prominent business owner Scott Applewood, fell under the sway of Johny Crow and his music. This prompted law enforcement to crack down on the now cult like movement. For better or worse, this sparked a change in the Grim Star movement, that escalated into all out war on society. In a raid on a Grim Star Rising compound, Sarah was injured in an exchange between law enforcement and Grim members.
Sarah was rushed to the hospital, where under examination, doctors found something very troubling within the young woman's body. For all accounts, she should have died from her injuries, but something foreign to her body was keeping her alive in a coma like state. Before more examination could be conducted, Grim Star members appeared in force at the local hospital, behaving like a well organized criminal outfit. The Grims killed the doctors, and destroyed their findings, taking the comatose Sarah with them. To this day, the Applewoods have a reward out, for any tips leading to the discovery of Sarah's fate.
From this point on, all Grim Star members of moderate involvement retreated from society completely. Forming cliques, and gangs throughout the city ships, defending their territories as any criminal or military organization would. Law enforcement were caught unprepared when all over the city ships, coordinated robberies and arson sprang up, committed by the movement that had once seemed harmless.
Wielding bats, knives, and guns, Grim Stars fight with with cool resolve, fearing not pain or death. Some even seem to welcome it. Their elites have been reported to have some kind of occult powers, tapping into the power of darkness to blind, constrict, and even inflict terrible physical and mental pain onto their enemies. Such elite members, dubbed "Witchen" have been known to lead the new recruitment drives. While pain has an adverse effect on most well adjusted citizens... to the lost and the damned, the fed up and addicted... the Witchen act as a beacon, drawing more lost souls to their future lives of darkness.
Members who prove themselves completely devoted to the Grim Star Life, are granted a special gift... a dark seed, that grows and takes root inside the individual, consuming them until the seed grows, eventually transforming the individual into a being known as "Shadowghast"
Eyes black, skin pale, and dark tendrils lapping from their body, the Shadowghasts are powerful foes for any law enforcement units. With increased strength and an eerie ability to shrug off mortal wounds, the Shadowghast fights with not only its body, but the tendrils of the being growing inside them.
Unbeknownst to anyone within the organization but Johny Crow himself... the source of the Grim Star's power does not come from its nihilistic philosophies... but from a dark entity of vast and unimaginable power. A collective mind, speaking from the depths of a black hole, called out to Johny Crow, and chose him to be its representative in the living world. Why or how it formed such a powerful bound is unknown to even Johny himself. All he knows, is that the darkness seeks to spread and consume, until the land of the living is as dark and devoid of humanity as the black hole from which it dwells.
