Re: A Few Points About Game Mechanics (1)

Look, there's nothing wrong with motivating players to give it a rest for a while (for the character that just failed), unless you are of the philosophy that there should never be any slowing down of the levelling process, ever, even when it could be part of a useful learning experience (or an impo...

Re: Time spent crafting, harvesting etc question

Harvesting and Crafting are not required activities. Some just don't want to, or don't care. Some love it. but the little goodies you can make or buy -- those are part of the Superhero genre. How do I know? I read Batman comics as a kid...and he always had the best stuff. Even Superman had a boatlo...

Re: A Few Points About Game Mechanics (1)

Reducing the character's power just after they have literally just proved they weren't powerful enough can lead to some very nasty chain-death scenarios if not handled *very* carefully. Well, I would argue that 99% of the time they proved they weren't smart/wise enough, rather that not powerful eno...

Re: Modes of Travel

Right, but didn't CoH have Flight, SuperJump, Superspeed, and Teleportation from day one?

Re: Pay to Play

Subscription model is the only way to keep toxic people out and to build a player base resembling the tight-knit, invested community that CoH had, in my opinion.

Re: Time spent crafting, harvesting etc question

Crafting is fine for those who like it, but it isn't exactly germain to the superhero genre. Sure, you have your occasional inventor characters in the source material, but they are relatively rare, and it is hard to justify adding an elaborate crafting system just for them. Adding an elaborate craft...

Re: A Few Points About Game Mechanics (1)

XP debt is a little heinous in concept, if you ask me. But I also agree that there need to be incentives to play carefully and thoughtfully, and for there to be consequences when your character is defeated. For instance, maybe have the character emerge from the hospital at lowered max capacity (hit ...

Re: Pool/Supporting Powers

I loved CoH, but if I'm being honest, I wasn't in love with the rigidly structured primary/secondary/ancillary power pool architecture. I'm an old-time Champions player (the table-top game, not the MMO), and I'm used to building a character with points, choosing whatever combination of powers I want...

Re: Planets and Commanders...

The customizable pet idea is a cool one. Just be careful to keep the implementation within the superhero genre. I mean, I know that we're flying through space and that the game has a certain sci-fi kind of feel to it, but at the end of the day the genre we're chasing here is superheroes not space op...

Re: gameplay...to twitch or not to twitch

Twitch play is not RPG play. The reason we call a game an RPG is because the character is able to do things we, the players, may not necessarily be able to do. That includes hit villains with great speed, agility, and accuracy. A twitch game makes my character only (and exactly) as good as I am, whi...

Re: Kickstarter is Coming

In a way, I was spoiled by CoH. I didn't even know it was in development until it was a shipping product. In fact, I didn't know it existed until I saw a demo of it at ComicCon 2004. And by the time I bought the game and made my first character, Issue 2 was already available for download. I don't ge...

I loved Superleap from CoX. There were many character concepts for which Flight did not fit, but Superleap did. Shame not to see it available at launch.

Re: Share your Favourite CoH Moments

The Accidental PVPers Our small group of five regular players created an all-Defender team and chewed through missions like crazy. At one point we were in Warburg for one of those rare PvE missions where the mission door happened to be in a PvP zone. Most of us weren't into PvP and had no intention...

Re: Group "Dungeon Running" at level 1?

Anything (and everything) that helps promote team play right from the start is a Good Thing. And that should surely include a low-level team "Trial".
